Pursuant to the recommendation of National Policy on Education (NPE) 1986 and quick achievement of Universal Elementary Education (UEE), District Institute of Education & Training (DIET) had established in many district in the country. In Mizoram, Aizawl and Lunglei DIET had beed established in the year 1988 and 1993 repectively. District Institute of Education & Training (DIET), Champhai had been established in the year 2005 as approved by TEAB meeting on 15th September, 2004 and functioned as Telescoped DIET/DRC. Telescoped DIET/DRC had conducted short course Training Programmes for all Elementary School Teachers in the district for In-service Teacher Education. It also act as well as Secondary and Higher Secondary School Teachers in the district. On 29th December, 2012 the TEAB Meeting approved upgradation of Telescoped DIET/ DRC, Champhai into Full Fledged DIET and Government of Mizoram notified upgradation order on 15th april 2013.
Champhai district is one of the new district which came into existence in the year 1998 consequent upon trifurcation of undivided Aizawl District. It is the third largest of the eight (8) districts in Mizoram in terms of size and population next to Aizawl and Lunglei district.
'Champhai ', which is the District Capital of Champhai is located 200 kms away from state capital of Mizoram, Aizawl and stretches from North to south direction about 200 km and 100 km from west to east direction and bordering Mynamar (Burma) in the eastern side and Manipur state in the Northern side.
DIET, Champhai is the only and apex Teacher Training Institute in the district which covers all Primary, Middle, High School and Higher Secondary School Teachers in the district.
ROLE OF DIET:
As DIETs are meant to be Nodal Institutions for improving Quality of Elementary Education in the district, DIET Champhai had conducted training programmes for the following-
(i) In-service Teacher Education.
(ii) Pre-Service Teacher Education.
(iii) In-service Training of Secondary School Teachers under RMSA due to the non-existence of CTE in the district.
(iv) Headmasters, Officers of the Education Department up to Block level on specially designed courses.
(v) Members of the Village Education Comittee (VECs), Community Leaders, Block and Clusters Resource Co-ordinators.
(vi) To provide Academic support to all Elementary Institutions under its district.
(vii) To conduct Action Research at Elementary level.
